PELICAN BROWN

Client:  The City of San Diego
Location:  Pacific Beach, CA
Media:  Bronze
Date:  2004

This project was intended to commemorate the history of Crystal Pier in the San Diego neighborhood of Pacific Beach. The Pier initially opened in 1927 with a ballroom at the end of the pier. The ballroom was removed 10 years later. The sculpture illustrates the character of “Pelican Brown,” a 5-foot tall dancing pelican with a story by Jan Phillips. The dance steps for the PB Tango are embedded in the paving adjacent to the site.

*Designed in collaboration with landscape architects Wimmer, Yamada and Caughey.
